Vladimir Putin born October 7, 1952 became involved with the KGB in the 1970's when he began at Leningrad State University as a law student. From there, he was recruited. During the late 70's, Putin began studying at a KGB school in Moscow. From there, he was assigned to work in state security agencies. He was first appointed to the Directorate secretariat, then the counterintelligence division. Half a year later, he was sent to operations personnel retraining courses. Putin worked at Leningrad for four and a half years in the First Main Directorate, the counterintelligence. Then Putin returned to Moscow to study at the Andropov Red Banner Institute, training for his trip to Germany which would be in 1985. Putin remained in Germany until 1990.
In those five years in Germany, Putin worked at the local intelligence office in Dresden, East Germany. He was promoted twice and in 1989, he was awarded the bronze medal issued in the German Democratic Republic, For Faithful Service to the National People’s Army.
In 1990, Putin returned to Leningrad and worked as an assistant the rector of Leningrad State University. He was responsible for the international relations sect. Six years later, his family (which consisted of himself, his wife and two young daughters) relocated to Moscow where he began to pursue his political career.
